To get anywhere in North Texas these days it seems you have to hop on a toll road.  It’s pretty frustrating that we all have to pay to sit in traffic during rush hour.

Regardless, it seems scammers have locked onto the toll business, and are sending drivers text messages claiming that they owe money for unpaid toll road balances.

The FBI has issued a warning to Texas drivers over this potential scam.

Apparently, these scam texts come with the message that a fee will be added on for late payment and provide a link where said payments can be fulfilled.  Austinite Allison Brown said per WFAA, "If you don't pay your toll balance like, immediately, then you know, you go from like $2 to $200. So, it's really scary. Like, honestly, it's a smart way to scam people.”

The FBI advises drivers to not click the link provided and to file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), including the phone number and website listed in the text

The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority said it will never send drivers texts without their consent and will never include nor ask for personal information.

If you, or anyone you know, has been targeted by this scam, you are asked to report it to txtag.org or by calling 1-888-468-9834.
