Over the last 15 years, quite a bit of greenspace has popped up throughout downtown Dallas as part of a plan to transform surface lots downtown into parks. Now, after months of anticipation the largest park in the area is finally set to open. It was announced recently that Carpenter Park will finally open in May.
The 5.7 acre park located in the shadow of IH-345, the freeway that separates downtown from Deep Ellum, will officially open to the public following a dedication ceremony on Tuesday, May 3. The news was announced by the chairman of Parks for Downtown Dallas and the president and CEO of the DallasNews Corporation, Robert Decherd, during Downtown Dallas Inc.’s annual meeting. According to D Magazine, the park will feature lawns, walking trails, a basketball court, a dog park, and public art.

Dallas first launched the plan to bring parks to downtown back in 2004. Since the plan started they have opened Main Street Garden, Belo Garden, Klyde Warren Park, Pacific Plaza, West End Square and Harwood Park. The 23 acres of greenspace added is more than any other American City. Soon DFW will have another place for dog owner’s to forget to pick up their pet’s poop.
