Buc-ee’s is amazing, no doubt about it.

But they’ve gained a reputation over the years for being quite free with its litigiousness, filing trademark lawsuits against other business they believe are infringing on the likeness of their beloved beaver.

This has put the store in the crosshairs of late-night talk show host John Oliver, who said on his HBO show Last Week Tonight that Buc-ee’s “love” for suing companies is “deeply American.”

Oliver said, “It’s quintessentially American. It’s gloriously weird, massive and full of salty snacks and red meat."

According to the Dallas Morning News, in recent years, Buc-ee’s has filed lawsuits against Super Fuels in Dallas, whose logo was a brown dog sporting a red cape, a drive-through liquor store in Missouri named Duckees featuring a cartoon duck wearing sunglasses, Choke Canyon Travel Center in Texas over its cartoon alligator wearing a cowboy hat, and Nut Huggers, an Oklahoma-based underwear company with a mascot of a squirrel.
