An Austin woman named Becky Levin Navarro booked a Waymo driverless taxi over the weekend when it started going in the wrong direction.
No big deal, you turn around and be on your merry way, right? Well if it only were that easy.
Instead of redirecting, the taxi parked itself under the MoPac Expressway, in a spot near where two lanes merge, and locked Navarro and other passengers inside!
According to Chron, Navarro contacted Waymo was cars behind them kept honking and whizzed by, but Waymo said “We don't have a way to just physically move the cars.”
Navarro documented her entire ordeal on TikTok. She told the representative to just let them out of the vehicle and they’ll walk the rest of the way. And as they started walking, guess what happened?
The car suddenly sprang back to life and drove right past them!
Of course it did.
Waymo spokesperson Chris Bonelli advised that any passengers can unlock the car themselves by pulling the door handle twice and stated that Navarro and her passengers pressed the “pull over” button, and they could have safely exited the vehicle at any time.
Either way, it still sounds like human drivers are the way to go.
