A banner for the language-learning platform Duolingo has appeared on a closed Hooters in Beaumont, and no one really knows why.

The banner, which is located at 850 Interstate 10, is similar to others that have recently appeared at other closed Hooters locations, including one in Galveston.

Duolingo said in a statement per WFAA, “Duo has always had a flair for drama. When he spotted an empty nest in Beaumont, he did what any overly ambitious owl might do: leave a few feathers and see who noticed. Learning can show up in unexpected places, and sometimes so can Duo.”

The signs have created speculation that Duolingo might be launching brick-and-mortar stores, but the company says that’s not the case.

The spokesperson continued, “We’ve seen the questions popping up around Beaumont, and our mascot, Duo, certainly knows how to spark curiosity.

“What you’re seeing is a temporary installation. Duo spotted an empty nest and decided to make himself visible.”
