One day, the speed limit on your commute to work may be 70mph. The next day, it could be 45.
That’s a new reality for Texans as the state will begin rolling out new electronic highway signs that can temporarily lower speed limits during dangerous driving conditions.
Per FOX 4, the signs came into fruition by a 2023 Texas law, House Bill 1885, which was written by State Rep. Terry Canales (D-Edinburg) following the 133-car pileup on I-35W in Fort Worth during winter storm of 2021.
The law will allow the Texas Transportation Commission to establish variable speed limits, which can be lowered temporarily to address weather, construction, heavy traffic or other potentially dangerous driving conditions.
The new signs are currently being installed across the state.
Some residents of Fort Worth have spotted them popping up along I-35W, and drivers have begun to notice similar signs on U.S. 54 in El Paso.
