The Fort Worth Zoo is celebrating a historic milestone with the first-ever eagle hatching at the zoo in their 117-year history.
Only five institutions currently house the African fish eagle, and the Fort Worth Zoo is the only AZA-accredited institution to have successfully hatched an African fish eagle in recent years, according to WFAA.
According to zoo officials, the chick is currently being raised in a protected area within its parents’ habitat while it continues to grow strong enough to take flight.
In the wild, African fish eagles usually begin flying at around 70 to 75 days old, and tend to stay near their parents for a few months before venturing out on their own.
