Affording a home has proven to be difficult across parts of Texas.  Retiring in the Lone Star State is proving to be as difficult as well.

A new study from Bankrate found Texas to be the second worst state in the nation for retirement, followed only behind Louisiana.

The study said of Texas, "Texas did well in the taxes category...but that was a notable outlier when compared to the state's other categories.

"The Lone Star State ranked dead last in health care and 49th in people of similar age. Safety was also notably weak, as the state ranked 38th."

New Hampshire, Maine, Wyoming, Vermont, and Idaho were named the five best states for retirement.

Stephen Kates, a Bankrate financial analyst said in a statement, "Our survey results may be shocking to any retirees who only considered warm weather and income taxes in their relocation plans.

"There is more to being a resident than just the number of sunny days and taxes.  Categories like public safety, walkability, access to health care, air quality and recreational opportunities add up to the daily quality of life retirees want."
