A plane just departed from Lancaster Regional Airport for its most important flight in more than eight decades.
The World War II-era plane "Ready 4 Duty" took off from North Texas, embarking on a 12,000-mile journey to commemorate the end of WWII with stops in Great Britain, the Netherlands, and France.
The plane is a U.S. Navy Douglas R4D-6S Skytrain called "Ready 4 Duty," and is painted with the vintage nose art of a pink bikini-clad woman painted just below the cockpit windows. It's often used for heritage flights and public tours.
DFW Wing of the Commemorative Air Force member Chris Volpe says he believes Ready 4 Duty is carrying more than "vintage rivets and WWII nostalgia" on this flight.
He told WFAA, "I think that it's a really important reminder for us that things that are valuable in this life often are hard, and that's why we do what we do."
