Chris Martin was interviewed by the U.K.'s Radio X and said he wants to use emojis as song titles on the next Coldplay album. While he’s gotten some pushback from “service providers,” he’s hoping to break new ground.
“We’re trying to have the first album with some tracks that have titles of just emojis,” Martin said.
“But it’s proving tricky because of all the service providers, some say, ‘You can’t do that’. You literally have ten million songs in one box. Let us have a picture of an apple for a song or something like that.”
While we could reasonably infer a track with an apple emoji would be called “Apple,” things could get confusing quickly. Of course, it’s entirely possible the song serves as a tribute to his and Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter Apple.
Coldplay recently returned with their out-of-this-world single “Higher Power” as the song certainly echoes the creative sentiments Martin expressed. In a recent interview with Audacy’s Cane + Corey, Martin gave a glimpse into the thematic background of the track.
"We spent the last year ripping up all the rules we had,” he said.
“So we were like, 'let's just do another language, or let's go to another planet' -- all of that stuff. I think we were just throwing away any concept of limitation."
