LISTEN NOW: Perry Farrell talks with Klein and Ally
As Perry prepared for his chat with Klein and Ally on Audacy's KROQ today, he was reminded about the old adage "Rock is dead," which seems to rear its ugly head from time to time. He's heard it all before; and then came bands like Radiohead, Soundgarden, and others who flipped that script. Over the last two and a half years of political turmoil, COVID, and misinformation, what he found was "music to my ears," he says.
"Because we have to make something positive out of this situation," Perry saw his kids take up musical instruments during the lockdown. "It touched my heart. They started playing all the instruments that I've got around the house. Their friends started coming over; I've got a garage band every afternoon and evening in my house. The reason I'm telling you this is there's so many groups now, all around Los Angeles, and there's so many kids that are getting in bands, it's gonna be a super exciting time as we come out into the sunshine -- which is right around now."
Sharing his thoughts on the 50th anniversary of the legendary KROQ in Los Angeles and hearing his band Jane's Addiction on the radio for the first time, he remembers vividly, "driving around with [guitarist] Dave Navarro, who had a habit of brushing his hair in the rearview mirror while he drove about 80 miles per hour everywhere. We're just driving around and then on came 'Jane Says,' and then I remember that for a kid that makes music, radio was so important to our lives. We were driving and then one of my own songs came on, and that's the moment I'll never forget. It stunned me and I just began to be filled with joy... and it was KROQ."
Perry's upcoming Kind Heaven Orchestra inaugural event, Heaven After Dark, with his wife/collaborator Etty Lau Farrell, is scheduled to kick off on February 17 at L.A.'s 1926 Room at the Belasco Theater.
