Just in time for wet weather, a food bank in the East Bay rolled out a new meal delivery system designed to keep needy families safe from the elements and COVID-19.
Opening up trunks for touchless meal delivery can be problematic in the rain. So, the Alameda Food Bank recently purchased a large, white tent and installed it next to the food distribution warehouse.
“We had been serving street side as cars would drive through our distribution system,” said Executive Director Cindy Houts. “Now, they will be driving next to the building under our new tent, so that the food and the volunteers can stay inside and mostly dry.”
Houts told KCBS Radio that the tent and other wet weather improvements have cost the food bank thousands of dollars that weren't in the budget; that's on top of the extra expense of buying more and more food for families struggling during the pandemic.
Fortunately, Houts said they are also receiving more donations from the community.
“And, the best way people can help is by donating cash, because with every dollar donated, we can purchase $7 worth of food,” she added.
