The Campbell Police Department said in a press release on Tuesday that officers arrested two men and "two individuals," charging each of them with child endangerment. According to a statement Campbell Police spokesperson Letysia Moresco sent to KCBS Radio on Wednesday, the number arrested totaled five people.
Child Protective Services took custody of four children during the incident, she said. Officials didn’t identify the people arrested.
Officers responded to a call asking for an ambulance for a man experiencing a mental health crisis at the 100 block of W. Rincon Avenue at 10:16 a.m. As Campbell police officers and Santa Clara County Fire Department Emergency Medical Services responded, police said a man held a wife inside a bedroom against her will.
Police closed the street between S. Milton and Salice avenues to traffic, calling in the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office for assistance and the Los Gatos Police Department to handle "all additional calls in Campbell."
When officers entered the residence, police said they found "two individuals" and "several children" in the garage. The duo allegedly refused to leave a vehicle, and police later arrested them on charges of child endangerment and resisting arrest.
Child Protective Services then took custody of the children.
The man and his wife "peacefully surrendered" after more than seven hours of negotiation, police said, charging him with child endangerment.
Police then found a man hiding in the attic after the negotiation ended. That man, whom police said was out on parole for burglary, had an outstanding warrant for violating parole, one for burglary and another for child abuse and second-degree robbery.
The Campbell Police Department announced on Twitter at 6 p.m. that the standoff had ended, reopening W. Rincon Avenue to traffic a couple of minutes later. Police initially announced the street closure in a 1:42 p.m. tweet.
Along with child endangerment, Moresco said that "illegal drugs were located at the residence and several of the individuals involved were arrested for multiple charges, one of the charges being under the influence of illegal drugs."
