Update (9:52 a.m.) : A family has claimed the missing flag and shadowbox.

Original story: Litter, debris, all kinds of items are usually found covering California’s highways.

But last week a different kind of lost item was picked up by the California Highway Patrol’s Dublin Area office – a veteran’s flag, folded and encased in a shadow box with a corresponding photo of a man in uniform.

Now, the CHP Dublin Area office is calling for outside help locating the flag’s rightful owner.

The flag was found on eastbound I-580, near Isabel Ave. They waited to post anything about the flag out of respect for the owners, in case they called about it, according to CHP Officer Tyler Hahn.

When an officer first found the flag, it had been carefully wrapped in a Golden State Warriors blanket, said Hahn.

This is the first time Hahn knows of something like this being found, but CHP officers do find valuables all the time. "Lot of people usually do call in for things," said Hahn. "We know for sure that this would be one of those items."

But after a week, no call came, so the office decided to post about it, hoping it would get some attention.

There have been no leads yet, except for a lot of retweets. "It’s obviously getting out there," said Hahn. "It’s a big world, it’s a big area."

But he’s hopeful in the meantime, and they plan on holding onto the flag for a while. Based on some new information, it’s possible the veteran in the photo is U.S. Army, he said, and if no one comes to claim it, CHP will consult with them on what to do.
