East Bay grass fire's progress stopped at 35 acres, forces road closures

A Sunday afternoon grass fire in the East Bay had its progress stopped at 35 acres, according to officials.

The fire, located in Clayton at Kirker Pass Road and Nortonville Road, began with a nearby vehicle fire. Firefighters from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and Cal Fire responded to the scene, containing 50% of the fire stopping its forward progress just before 3 p.m.

Cal Fire’s Santa Clara Unit tweeted Sunday afternoon that the grass fire had grown to 10 acres just after 1:30 p.m.

Fifteen minutes later, the fire had grown to 25 acres.

At 2:09 p.m., Cal Fire aircraft indicated the fire was spreading moderately and had the potential burn up to 100 acres.

The fire reached 35 acres just prior to 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, forcing closures for "a few hours" on Kirker Pass Road at Hess Road in Concord and Buchanan Road in Pittsburg.
