Landscapers on Thursday morning discovered a car mysteriously submerged four to five feet underneath a multi-million dollar Atherton property.
The contractors – who were working on a project at the home when they found the buried vehicle – subsequently contacted Atherton Police who worked long into the night excavating the car from the ground.
The San Mateo Crime Lab also sent technicians to help investigate the scene.
The gated 1.6 acre property is located at 351 Stockbridge Avenue in a quiet upscale neighborhood well off the main road. It was bought by the current owners for $15 million, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Commander Dan Larson said the car predated the current property owners, who were unaware of the vehicle's presence, and was buried as far back as the early 1990s.
Cadaver dogs were also brought to the scene and "made a slight notification of possible human remains," Larson said. However, there's currently no evidence of human remains in the car.
Investigators instead found unused bags of concrete completely filling the car for reasons that remain unclear.
Some of the landscaping crews showed up Friday morning expecting to work but were called off as the investigation continues.
Authorities remained on scene on Friday. Police said the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
