The initial crash occurred just before 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday on the southbound Highway 101 to eastbound I-80 connector ramp from the Central Freeway, California Highway Patrol Spokesperson Mark Andrews told KCBS Radio and according to a CHP press release.
The first collision caused one of the vehicles involved, a Nissan sedan, to be stopped in the roadway, blocking one of the two traffic lanes, authorities said. A motorcyclist approached the disabled vehicle, and, in an attempt to avoid it, lost control. The motorcycle struck the wall, which caused the rider to be ejected from the bike and thrown over the side of the freeway. The motorcyclist fell onto the freeway below and landed on a Honda sedan traveling on westbound I-80 to the southbound Highway 101 connector ramp. Officials said the motorcyclist, while laying in the roadway, was hit by one or more vehicles and pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
The driver of the Honda slowed to a stop and was subsequently hit from behind by a Subaru Forester, which was unable safely slow down in time to avoid the collision.
The Nissan and Subaru drivers were both arrested and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence. The Honda driver sustained minor injuries, Andrews said.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with further information is asked to contact CHP Officer Israel Garcia at 415-557-1094.
The accidents forced most lanes in the area to close for multiple hours, creating massive gridlock during the morning commute to and from the Bay Bridge.
All lanes reopened as of 9:30 a.m., including from southbound Highway 101 to the eastbound skyway and from westbound I-80 to southbound Highway 101. However, traffic coming into San Francisco continued to back up well east of the MacArthur Maze and towards the metering lights of the Bay Bridge throughout the morning.
