California Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday declared a state of emergency in Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties due to this week’s damaging winter storms.
The storms forced the evacuation of thousands of residents due to threats of mudslides and debris flows and damaged critical infrastructure, including washing out a portion of Highway 1 in Big Sur.
The emergency proclamation directs Caltrans to request immediate assistance through the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief Program and the Office of Emergency Services to help the local governments.
