Gov. Gavin Newsom is taking a page from Texas' controversial abortion law in a new call for gun control.

A recent Supreme Court decision allows private citizens to sue Texas abortion providers. Now, Newsom wants a law in California where citizens can sue people who help put ghost guns and assault weapons on the street.

"The governor is saying, 'well if they can do this in Texas, that is, allow citizens to go ahead and sue people who are involved with providing an abortion, why can't we do that in California,'" political analyst Larry Gerston told KCBS Radio.

Gerston said it's a move that contradicts Newsom's previous stand. "The governor has been highly critical of the Texas law and the way the courts have handled it, so you kind of wonder whether he really means it or it’s tongue in cheek."

Rory Little, professor of law at UC Hastings, told KCBS Radio that he believes Newsom's statement is an understandable reaction to the supreme court’s "really short sighted decision to not stop a state statute in Texas that is clearly unconstitutional."
