California’s ballparks and stadiums will be eligible to open with COVID-19 restrictions beginning April 1, just in time for the Oakland Athletics' opening day.
A’s President Dave Kaval told KCBS Radio that this is a great, exciting development.
“We are thrilled that the state of California and Governor Newsom and Major League Baseball and the other California teams have worked together to find a way to have fans and welcome fans back to the stadiums for opening day,” he said.
The capacity of ballparks and stadiums will depend on the COVID-19 reopening tier that the county is in, state officials announced Friday.
A multitude of COVID-19 precautions will be in place at the Oakland Coliseum. Masks and social distancing will be required, and there will be no tailgating.
Tickets must be bought in pods of two or four due to social distancing requirements, and will go on sale March 23.
“It’s going to be great to hear people cheering for our great players and our team this season on opening day,” Kaval said.
The Coliseum is home to the A’s, but the north parking lot is also currently the site of a mass COVID-19 vaccination center.
Kaval said the stadium reopening and vaccination center can coexist.
“We designed the mass vaccination site to ensure that it could operate with the stadium operating in a socially distanced fashion,” he noted.
Kaval said that for parking, fans will use the south lot and enter on Hegenberger Road, to avoid crossing paths with the vaccination site.
