The Oakland City Council has voted to create a "John Madden Day" which will be observed every year on the Bay Area and football icon's birthday, April 10.
The Hall-of-Fame Oakland Raiders coach and NFL broadcaster, Bay Area native son and KCBS Radio legend died last December at the age of 85.
"John Madden really embodies the excitement of Oakland," Councilmember Dan Kalb told KCBS Radio. "He was head coach for 10 years, an assistant coach prior to that, he lived in the East Bay for most of his adult life. He really felt a connection to Oakland."
Kalb helped push the resolution forward, with assistance from both the Madden family and the grassroots group "Forever Oakland." The two camps were connected because each heard the other being interviewed on KCBS Radio, the same station that Madden was a fixture on for countless mornings across 20 years.
"We heard each other and as a result, the Madden family reached out," Griz Jones, founder of Forever Oakland, told KCBS Radio. "They were honored by how we represented John Madden."
"We felt compelled to make sure John Madden's legacy was cemented here in Oakland, California forever," Jones said.
