Olivia Chan, Taylor Lowe, Rowan Blacklock and Cecilia Thomsak are the four Oakland girls to earn the Eagle Scout rank, Oaklandside reported.

It takes a little more than three years to become an Eagle Scout.

To earn the ranking people need to obtain 21 or more merit badges, create and complete an Eagle project, write several essays and go through a national board of review, the publication said.

Also, one of the female members and Danville resident Apara Sai Jella was awarded the national organization's project of the year. She created an "oasis of serenity" at an Oakland residential substance abuse treatment center for women, Oaklandside said. Her two-part project involved making a children's area with a playground and then in women's area, they planted a garden and made a mediation area, the publication reported.

Girls were allowed to join the organization in 2019 after the name was officially changed to Scouts BSA to be more gender inclusive.

In 2013, the Boy Scouts lifted its ban on gay scouts; in 2015 they allowed gay people to be leaders. In 2017 transgender youth were allowed to join the organization.
