A San Francisco man has been arrested for breaking into the former Cliff House restaurant nearly a month after it closed and stealing historic memorabilia, including a relic of the long-gone Sutro Baths.
The unidentified man was taken into custody by U.S. Park Police in the city's Outer Richmond neighborhood on February 12, Golden Gate National Recreation Area Spokesman Julian Espinoza confirmed to KCBS Radio.
Police said he stole a bathing suit with "Sutro Baths" written across the chest valued at $2,000, among other items like artwork and photographs. People would wear the suits when at the site, located along Lands End next to the Cliff House location, in the early 1900s.
The incident happened between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on January 26.
Espinoza said most of the missing items were recovered in several places: the man's residence, along Ocean Beach and in second-hand shops in San Francisco. The item that remains missing is a photograph worth $50.
Police would not clarify if they're looking for other suspects, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Stills captured from security footage appear to show at least two people during the burglary.
The Cliff House permanently closed in December, but may ultimately reopen under another name.
