The 27-year police veteran has been charged with second degree robbery and resisting arrest.

"We received a call for service, we arrived on scene, and we shortly thereafter interacted a person who was later identified as a suspect, he was subsequently arrested," San Mateo police spokeswoman Alison Gilmore told KTVU.

The incident began when Cole ordered the pharmacy at the 666 Concar Dr. location to give him painkillers, as reported by the station. He then tried to run away. Details have not yet been made available on what may have been stolen or if anyone was injured in the process.

He was off duty during the incident.

Cole spent part of his time in law enforcement working with those dealing with addiction, helping them receive essential services, the station reported.

Most recently, Cole worked in the Field Operations Bureau.

The investigation is ongoing, police have not disclosed if Cole was armed during the incident. The sergeant posted bond on Friday and is no longer in custody, according to the station.
