It's back to work today for some Uber employees.
A limited number of employees are now working out of the ride hailing company's brand new headquarters in San Francisco's Mission Bay neighborhood.
The new headquarters by Chase Center is a four building complex that was finished during the pandemic so most employees have never been inside, but that changes today.
Uber is the first major tech company to reopen under the orange tier in San Francisco, which allows for 20% capacity at non-essential office buildings.
"I'm really excited about it, people are very excited, pumped to be here," said Mike Huaco, Uber's VP of Global Real Estate. "Ballpark we expect maybe today about 100, 150."
In comparison, the one million square foot complex can hold 5,000 employees.
Returning to the office is for now completely voluntary.
"We have 500 employees that registered to come in but being the first day it'll probably take...we've seen in other offices we've opened around the world, it's a slow trickle in and after the first week or two you get a good amount of folks coming in."
Huaco said the company's own polling finds that some employees are not enjoying working from home.
"Employees do want to come back to the office some portion of the time. That's what at least our data and the general data consensus is in the marketplace."
Uber drivers, on the other hand, are classified as independent contractors and have been working throughout the pandemic.
Facebook also recently announced its plan to reopen its Menlo Park headquarters, but not until May 10.
