UC Berkeley dorm residents get a pandemic reprieve

Residents of UC Berkeley dormitories are free to leave their rooms, sort of.

It was called a self-sequester. Cal's restrictive stay-in-your-dorm order went into effect February 1. It's been lifted now, as scheduled.

"Not exactly, though," one student told KCBS Radio. "We still can't be in large gatherings." That same household-only and pod interaction is still encouraged, and most residents seem to be in compliance.

Under the order, students were only allowed to leave their rooms in order to use the bathroom, pick up food, get a coronavirus test, see a doctor or in the event of an emergency. Any violation of the school's COVID-19 guidelines could have resulted in lost housing or suspension.

"There's been a lot of outbreaks with the parties at the frats and co-ops…but that's been really bad, so I would say no (they're not overdoing it)," another student said.

The school has dealt with at least two surges in new coronavirus cases.
