Nguyen was shot and killed on Tuesday while driving home from work on Interstate 580, near the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza in Oakland.

When officers arrived at the scene, Nguyen was found with a gunshot wound after apparently swerving and crashing into a nearby guardrail.

He succumbed to his injuries after being taken to a nearby hospital.

"We are heartbroken and disturbed by this senseless act of gun violence," the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a tweet with a video of Nguyen's body being transported in a solemn processional.

Other local officials have offered their condolences in the wake of the shooting.

"Peace to his family," wrote Rep. Eric Swalwell, an East Bay Congressman on Twitter on Wednesday. "And hopefully the thunder of justice comes soon to his killer."

"It is a horrible tragedy that as he drove home from his academy training, he was senselessly shot and killed," wrote Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley in a statement.
