San Francisco's Recreation and Park Department announced that beginning April 10, several youth sports teams will be allowed to play at certain park facilities.

The "Let the Kids Play" field allocation program will give children a fast-track back to the sports they love by providing field space to leagues offering a seven-week "mini season" for soccer, baseball, softball, flag football and lacrosse.

The abbreviated season for many sports activities will run through Memorial Day.

"Teams are signing up next week," said Phil Ginsburg, general manager of the Recreation and Park Department. "We're providing some opportunity for individual kids who want to sign up, and they can be placed with different teams. Practices begin the third week of March, and then in April it's play ball."

There will be a score of COVID-19 safety protocols in place. Masks must be worn except when playing in competitions. No fans will be allowed. No more than 25 players on a team can participate.

"We want kids out there," Ginsburg told KCBS Radio. "We know how much it means to San Francisco children and their parents, so we didn't want to wait a minute longer than necessary to get kids back onto our fields."

Certain adult league play will begin March 27, with games happening on nights and weekends.
