Tuesday is a landmark day in California’s coronavirus reopening process.
The state is eliminating restrictions on limited capacities, physical distancing and with exceptions, indoor mask wearing. It's also ditching the color-coded reopening tiers. A top Bay Area medical expert said that California is ready for the loosened rules.
"I have so wholly embraced the effectiveness of the vaccines especially even against the variants, which I’m trying to explain through the immune system to the public, that I am comfortable taking off my mask," UCSF Disease Control Specialist Dr. Monica Gandhi told KCBS Radio.
Dr. Gandhi was quick to say that if these changes make people nervous, they should stay with their routine.
"It made me nervous. I actually have been taking it off outside and it made me nervous," she said. "I’ll probably take a week or so and then I’m going to take (my mask) off inside."
Masks must still be worn on public transportation, in healthcare and correctional facilities, many classrooms and airplanes.
In addition, businesses may still impose masks requirements despite what state and federal health rules are.
"Tomorrow, politically, economically, and for health reasons, (the state) is saying California is ready to reopen," KCBS Radio insider Phil Matier said on Monday. "The idea is to get people up and out."
