Calls To PA State Police Jump But Crime Is Down Sharply Amid Coronavirus

HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The number of calls coming into Pennsylvania State Police barracks has risen substantially during the Coronavirus outbreak, but the number of crimes has significantly gone down.

Before COVID-19 was confirmed in Pennsylvania, there were 20,549 calls to state police.


The dates used as a baseline is February 22-28.

During the week of March 28 – April 3 there were 35,965 calls, an increase of 15,416.

But criminal activity and crash numbers are down

During the base week there were 2,317 criminal offensives with only 265 during the week of 3/38-4/3.

In addition property crimes decreased from 667 to 63, vehicle crashes went down from 1,286 to 320 and total arrests fell from 1,286 to 319, a difference of 967.

Total DUI arrests also saw a sharp drop going from 420 during the base week in February to 124 at the beginning of April.

Since Governor Tom Wolf ordered all non-life essential businesses closed in the commonwealth, 235 across the state have warned and zero have been cited.

Since April 1 there have been 17 Stay-At-Home warnings issued by State Police with two being cited.
