PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese is making some changes to help suppress the spread of COVID-19 in the Pittsburgh area.

While there have been no confirmed cases in Western PA, local officials and leaders are still making changes.

All nonessential, diocesan-sponsored gathering beginning March 16 will be canceled.

Masses, confessions, religious education and Catholic school classes will continue as scheduled with previous precautions in place.

The diocese also encourages parishes with fish fries to come "take out" only and to contact the health department for hygiene guidance.

"As a Catholic faith community, in times of uncertainty our first response is to pray for guidance and grace to meet the challenges of the day," Bishop Zubik wrote. "In creating policies and procedures related to the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19), we join people from around the world who are working through the same things. As a people of action, our focus will be on what steps we can take to protect all that we love. Working together in our communities, schools, and homes, as we always do, will sustain us through any level of challenge."

The church says they will keep the public updated as details develop and change.
