Christmas Travel Spikes at Pittsburgh International

Airport Security

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Some 300,000 passengers are expected through Pittsburgh International Airport by January 2. Christmas week is one of the busiest travel weeks of the year, according to airport spokesman Matt Neistein.

"Christmas day is probably our slowest say," says Neistein. "We're averaging about 30,000 passengers a day at this point." The airport's busiest day was late last week.

And while Pittsburgh is not expecting a white Christmas the weather is helping with air travel. There have been few flight delays in and out of Pittsburgh International. Though there were some problems around the country including parts of Florida and Georgia because of heavy rain.

Travelers might want to check the Transportation Security Agency app to see about waiting times at security lines nationwide. In PIttsburgh wait times were averaging 27 minutes at midday Monday.

"Our busiest times tend to be early in the morning, 5 to 8 in the morning, and 5 to 7 in the evening," says Neistein.

And even visitors to the airport can get some last minute shopping done. First they need to get a My PIT Pass on the ticketing level. There passengers must present a valid driver's licensed or other government issued ID to pass a background check. Access to the airside terminal is through security.
