PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — The City of Pittsburgh plans to appeal a judge's ruling Tuesday that it cannot enforce gun laws passed in April.

The gun restrictions were drawn up after last year's shooting at Tree of Life synagogue that claimed 11 lives. Allegheny County Judge Joseph James has ruled that they are "void and unenforceable" because state law forbids municipalities from regulating guns.

The legislation would have restricted military-style assault weapons, banned most uses of armor-piercing ammunition and high-capacity magazines, and allowed temporary seizure of guns from people determined to be a danger to themselves or others.

A spokesman for Mayor Bill Peduto says a long legal battle was expected, and the fight will continue "for the right to take commonsense steps to prevent future gun violence."
