PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The city of Pittsburgh has agreed to waive parking citations and pay the towing fees for a couple dozen vehicles parked illegally the night before the Pittsburgh Marathon.
The city and Mayor BIll Peduto tweeted that night that towing would start at 12 midnight. But it actually started after 11pm as posted signs read on Walnut Street in Shadyside. Monday, the mayor met with Police Chief Scott Schubert and the owners of the McGann and Chester Towing Company.
A spokesman for the mayor says police have the addresses of everyone receiving fines and towing charges and will reach out to them directly.
“According to Police Chief Schubert there were approximately 30 citations and 23 tows from 11 PM to 12 Midnight before the marathon which the city will be waiving,” said spokesman Tim McNulty in a statement. “Parking citations are $112.50 ($50 fine and $62.50 costs) and towing fees are $135.”
The city and towing company say they will work over the summer to make sure future towing for the marathon occurs at the latest time possible but still in time to clear streets for the race.
