Coronavirus Cases In PA Jump By Nearly 1,000 In One Day

HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – The number of coronavirus cases in Pennsylvania has jumped by nearly 1,000 in one day.

The PA Department of Health confirmed that as of midnight, April 1, there are 962 new cases to bring the state total to 5,805 in 60 counties.

11 additional people have died bringing the total to 74.

A total of 37,645 people have tested negative for coronavirus.

There are now  356 cases with two deaths in Allegheny County,  54 with two deaths in Beaver,  64 with two deaths in Butler, 35 with zero deaths in Washington, 72 with zero deaths in Westmoreland,  five with zero deaths in Armstrong, 13 with two deaths in Lawrence, eight with no deaths in Mercer, six with no deaths in Indiana,  nine with no deaths in Greene, 14 with one deaths in Fayette,  three with no deaths in Somerset and three with no deaths in Cambria for a total of 642 cases  and nine dead in the area.

The age breakdown:

  • Nearly 1% are aged 0-4;
  • Nearly 1% are aged 5-12;
  • 1% are aged 13-18;
  • Nearly 9% are aged 19-24;
  • 40% are aged 25-49;
  • Nearly 29% are aged 50-64; and
  • 19% are aged 65 or older.

 A majority of the patients hospitalized are 65 or older and there have been no pediatric deaths.

“The continued rise in cases combined with our increasing deaths from COVID-19 reflects the seriousness of this situation,” Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. “We need everyone to listen to the orders in place and to stay calm, stay home and stay safe. We know that these prolonged mitigation effects have been difficult for everyone, but it is essential that everyone follows these orders and does not go out unless they absolutely must.”

There are also 33 counties currently under a Stay-at-Home order in the commonwealth.

That order is currently in effect through April 30.
