PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Public comment on Pittsburgh's proposed gun control legislation lasted for nearly four hours last night.

The heated hearing had to be held in the lobby of the City-County building, rather than council's smaller chambers.

Councilman Corey O'Connor told Larry and John on KDKA Radio Friday why council is pursuing the issue after the Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala said the bills are unconstitutional.

"When you're doing what we believe is the right thing, to start a dialog to have this conversation because we're seeing so many mass shootings across this country, why not start in Pittsburgh?", asked O'Connor.

O'Connor adds the legislation needed to be clarified last night to some who attended.

"We're getting a lot of people that think we're not allowing you to own a gun or protect yourself in Pittsburgh, that's not the case," said O'Connor. "You can have handguns, shotguns, rifles, a number of things. We're looking at specific assault weapons as well as accessories which are defined in the bill."

The third bill would allow temporary seizure of weapons from residents deemed dangerous.

A final vote is expected mid-February.
