HARRISBURG, PA (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Governor Tom Wolf announced on Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) has approved Pennsylvania's request for relief funds to help schools combat the impacts of COVID-19.

Pennsylvania will be receiving $523.8 million in relief funds.

Beginning on Wednesday, May 13, local schools or education agencies can apply to The Pennsylvania Department of Education for funds.

"As educators, our top priority has always been to ensure the health and safety of staff and students," said Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera. "The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented change to our school communities, and school leaders across the state have stepped up to ensure students and families continue to be served. These funds will provide vital assistance during this critical time."

Through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act 90% of the allocated money will go through public and charter schools.

The remaining funds will be used for "state-level activities to address issues caused by COVID-19.

The Department of Education has a document that lists which schools will be receiving benefits and how much they're designated to receive.
