PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The human remains found in a garbage bag in Plum Borough this past weekend have been identified.
Allegheny County Police say the remains are those of 67-year-old Elizabeth Wiesenfeld of Whitehall who had been missing since April 30, 2019.
A Plum Borough Police Officer was on a routine patrol in an area that is known for illegal dumping and off-road vehicle use.
The officer spotted a garbage bag that appeared to have a shoe sticking out of a tear in the back.
Upon opening the bag, the officer discovered the human remains.
The investigation led to the arrest of 47-year-old Handyman Douglas Berry who was charged with Criminal Homicide back in September.
The Allegheny County District Attorney’s office released the following statement Monday.
"District Attorney Zappala would like to acknowledge the work of the Allegheny County Police, Whitehall Borough Police and Plum Borough Police along with others who have contributed to this investigation. Finding the remains of Elizabeth is important for her family and we will be assisting them as this case proceeds to trial. While the defendant in this matter is presumed innocent until proven guilty, this development certainly strengthens our efforts to move forward with this prosecution and seek justice for Elizabeth, her family and friends."
