PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - There is encouraging news in the Pittsburgh area's fight against coronavirus.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald tells KDKA Radio he looks what he sees in recent daily numbers, a downward trend.

New cases in the last three days are at levels reported 14 days ago.

"You've gone through two weeks those folks pretty much for the most part have now are out of the symptoms and moving in that direction so it is really positive to see that," said Fitzgerald.

Doctors at UPMC on Thursday said they believe the mitigation efforts in the area and state, like social distancing, are working to keep the number of COVID-19 cases from spiking.

The doctors add that this is not the time to let up and it's important to maintain the practices that have been implemented to keep the numbers down.

Data also showed cases in the area could plateau this weekend, but doctors warn that it is only one of many models but they hope the current models are correct.

UPMC says they are prepared for a much worse case scenario and add they have plenty of masks, gloves and beds for those that are sick as of now.
