PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — There will be big ears, floppy tails and lots of fur around the David Lawrence Convention Center this weekend.

Nearly 9,000 people from all over the United States and other countries are arriving in Pittsburgh for the start of the annual furry convention, Anthrocon.

According to the Anthrocon website, the event celebrates “anthropomorphics, which are humanlike animal characters,” that “have fascinated mankind since the dawn of human imagination.”

Anthropomorphics are “artists, animators, writers, costumers, puppeteers, and everyday fans who enjoy cartoon animals and their kin.”

Costumes are not required at the event, and KDKA’s Joe Destio reports, most of the people who attend the convention do not have costumes, but come for the fun.

Pittsburgh is hosting the convention for the fourteen straight year, which brings in nearly 9 million dollars into the local economy.

The convention kicked off Thursday and continues through Sunday.
