PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Blue plastic bags, long a staple at supermarkets and at curbside, will start to disappear around Pittsburgh.
Beginning Wednesday, there will be no more blue plastic bags at the Giant Eagle Waterworks store.
Shoppers must use their own bags, or can purchase reusable or paper.
It comes the same week Pittsburgh Council voted to accept a grant to buy containers for recyclables, eventually phasing out blue plastic bags at curbside.
Giant Eagle's Jannah Jablonowski says other plastics will go away too.
“Alternate straw options for our GetGo locations and some boxed water options for our Giant Eagle brand single-serve water beverages,” said Jablonowski.
Jablonowski says shoppers can use their own bags, even plastic, can buy reusable, “or we will also have an alternate option, paper bag for customers, but there will be a 10 cent fee per paper bag,”
Giant Eagle says 1.8 million blue bags have already been saved since the pilot was announced last month.
Customers receive one fuel perk for each reusable back they use.
