PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Allegheny County Health Department is investigating after preliminary information shows sulfur dioxide exceeded federal standards early Thursday morning in North Braddock.

The ACHD says a monitor measured .079 parts per million at 2 a.m. near the Edgar Thomson Works The federal stander for hourly sulfur dioxide is .075 ppm.


sulfur dioxide is a toxic chemical and can be harmful to people who breathe it in.

It can cause, coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath and is especially harmful to those who have asthma ans other similar breathing problems. 

In addition, the health department has received many concerns and questions surrounding an emission plume seen at U.S. Steel's Edgar Thomson works on June 17.

U.S. Steel told the health department that a valve did not open during startup of a blast furnace after being shut down for routine maintenance.

The ACHD is investigating that incident as well.
