PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A staple in the Hill District since the 1960's, the Hill House Association announced it will dissolve by the end of June.
The announcement was made Tuesday night at a community meeting at the Blakey Program Center.
The Hill House Association has long been a source of a spectrum of social services in the Hill District, but after facing $12 million in debt, their Board of Directors has decided to dissolve the organization.
District 6 Councilman Daniel Lavelle tells KDKA Radio despite trying to sell all seven of its properties, debt is insurmountable.”They are so far in debt that even with the sale of their various properties, it’s not enough to fully get them out of debt as well as have operating dollars.”
Lavelle added it’s a hard fact for the community to accept.
“It’s sad, given that the significance that that organization has played not only in the Hill District but for much of the African American community in Pittsburgh and the region as a whole.”
Lavelle said several services, like those for seniors, will transition from the Hill House Association to other local agencies.Hill House is trying to sell its seven properties including the shopping center where Shop ‘n Save recently closed.
