PITSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - As warm weather inches closer, so are summer pests.

Entomologist with Ehrlich Pest Control, Chad Gore, is here to help with that. He joined KDKA Radio on Tuesday to tell listeners how to keep insects away.

Here are some of the questions that he was asked:

How do you keep stink bugs out of the house?

“Best way to keep them from coming into the house is to make sure the house is sealed up. Often times, that’s making sure that things in the higher part of the house are sealed up on the outside; underneath fascia and cable vents,” Gore tells KDKA Radio.

“If they are already in, there is no need to spray insecticide because you are just exposing yourself to it.”

What does the spotted lanternfly do?

“It’s a plant hopper. It’s kind of related to aphids and scale insects that you find on plants, and really they just feed on plants,” Gore explains.

“One of the biggest problems that agricultural agencies are concerned about is the damage that they can do to our crops.”

Will a spotted lanternfly try to make its way in to a house?

“Unlike the stink bugs, they don’t seek overwintering shelters. We don’t have to worry about them in the fall trying to come in to the house,” Gore added.

“They will get on to a structure, but they’re not going to come inside.”

Is it important to identify the ant species that you are dealing with?

“Some are pretty easy to control and it really doesn’t matter what you do to them,” Gore said.

“There are some, if you use the wrong product, if it’s a repellent product especially, will cause the colony to split up in to multiple colonies.”
