PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A dozen cases of MRSA have been reported at UPMC Children's Hospital neonatal intensive care unit.

Containment and infection prevention protocol is in place, but is the public at risk?

On KDKA Radio, Dr. Meghan Brown tells Lynne Hayes-Freeland many people carry MRSA, but there are ways to prevent infection.

“We need to be adamant about washing our hands especially when we are around people with weak immune systems whose bodies may not be strong enough to protect them from getting infected.”

Dr. Brown adds it is not something to panic about but people should be aware.

“It’s not something that generally we need to be concerned about but I do think that we need to be aware that MRSA is everywhere,” said Brown. “Two in out of every 100 people carry MRSA on their bodies.”

Brown also suggests cleaning and covering wounds, and having any sign of infection checked by a doctor as soon as possible.
