PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The jury in the trial of Cheron Shelton began deliberations just before 4:00 Monday afternoon, but have concluded for the day.

Deliberations will start up Tuesday morning.

Shelton is charged in the Wilkinsburg mass murders at a 2016 backyard cookout.

KDKA Radio's Joe DeStio at the courthouse says in his hour-long closing argument, defense attorney Randall McKinney told the jury the science doesn’t prove the case, it proves the opposite.

He also accused the prosecution of relying on innuendo and using “red herrings” as evidence.

The prosecutor Kevin Chernosky told the jury, how they dare question the testimony of Wilkinsburg detective Adams who identified Shelton near the massacre that night and got his license plate.

He added the defense wants the jury to buy into some “vast conspiracy.”

The only defense witness was Shelton’s mother who testified he was at her home with his girlfriend and his two children that day.

Shelton did not take the stand in his own defense.

The jury will pick a foreperson and either begin deliberations till 6 p.m. or go home for the day and begin Tuesday morning.
