HARRISBURG, Pa (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - One million dollars went to combat sexual violence on college campuses Wednesday.

It's a part of the state's "It's On Us" initiative that seeks to prevent assaults on students and strengthen reporting and response systems in state schools. Governor Tom Wolf calls the statistics "heartbreaking"

"An estimated one in five college women are assaulted . . . that's an astonishing 20 percent of female students that will be assaulted," said Wolf.

Wolf adds the program is designed to help all students

"Sexual violence does not discriminate. It can happen to any person. It can happen at any time and it has a corrosive effect on everybody. It clearly affects the survivors but it also affects the friends, colleagues and family members."

38 schools received grants. Local schools Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon, Chatham and Robert Morris were first-time recipients.
