PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) — The Pittsburgh Metro Area ranks 19th on a list of most susceptible regions to job loss due to computers and automation.

"28.5 percent of Pittsburgh's workforce is considered vulnerable to automation," according to Tricia Harte at Digital Third Coast. That's a marketing firm for Kempler Industries that sponsored the study based on University of Oxford research.

The study shows it's no longer just manufacturing jobs at risk from automation. In fact the jobs most at risk in the Pittsburgh metro area are retail salespersons, office clerks, food prep and servers, cashiers, and waiters and waitresses.

"As technology grows and grows and technology is aiming toward consumer satisfaction, some of these consumer facing positions are considered vulnerable," said Harte.

Las Vegas tops the list with 33 percent of its workforce facing possible job loss due to automation. Other metro areas above 30 percent include Orlando, Miami, Tampa, San Antonio, and Dallas.
