PITTSBURGH (Newsradio1020 KDKA) - The city of Pittsburgh is intervening in Norfolk Southern's effort to elevate bridges through North Side neighborhoods.
North Side resident Glenn Olcerst tells KDKA Radio he has been concerned for some time about safety and pollution issues related to the line.
"(University of Pittsburgh) analysts have determined that that's the equivalent of 6,800 diesel buses driving past your front door every day," said Olcerst. "That rail line carries 2.8 millions of extreme crude through Pittsburgh a year."
Norfolk Southern wants to elevate North Side bridges to carry taller rail cars adjacent to cars carrying crude. Now the city's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure is asking the state PUC to require alternative plans to protect neighborhoods and residents.
Residents also question if Norfolk Southern is doing proper bridge and rail inspections.
