PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - One local charity is continuing the work of one of Pittsburgh fallen heroes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On January 7, 2014 Captain Sean Ruane along with three others died in a helicopter accident while conducting a training mission in England.

Captain Ruane worked his entire like to make a difference and improve the lives of those around him, even with something as simple as a smile.

Ruane’s friends and family are keeping his legacy alive through the Captain Sean M. Ruane Memorial Foundation and are dedicated to helping others through a scholarship in Sean’s name and other community acts of kindness.

The latest act of kindness from the foundation is helping those on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, health care workers.

On Monday, the foundation provided lunch from Mission BBQ for all the health care workers at Heritage Valley Kennedy (formerly Ohio Valley General Hospital).

“We would like to thank The Captain Sean M Ruane Foundation for their donation of lunch to health care workers at Heritage Valley Kennedy! The lunch the Foundation provided was in appreciation of the hard work of health care staff in these uncertain times,” Heritage Valley said in a Facebook post.

The Sean M. Ruane Memorial Foundation has also purchased food gift cards from Bobby D's in Kennedy Township for the local police department and had the Cooked Goose catering company in Coraopolis provide lunch for the Robinson Township Police.

Ruane grew up in Kennedy Township and graduated from Montour High School

"We just feel so incredibly lucky to have been supported by the businesses and public servants in such a tight-knit community over the past 5 years, it was the least we could do to give back," Chris Hearn with the foundation told KDKA Radio.

The Foundation, like many others around the area and all over the world have had to cancel fundraising events amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Their annual Captain Sean M. Ruane Memorial Golf Outing scheduled for May 16 has been canceled but hope to hold their annual corn hole tournament in August.
